Memory Loss and Personality Change Can Affect Brain Injury Victims for Months and Years

We are aware of the long-term effects that can plague a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) victim. We have experience effectively demonstrating the impact of these injuries, which can be difficult to prove in court. We arrange for tests such as MRIs and CT scans. We connect our clients with neuropsychological testing facilities that specialize in identifying and treating brain injuries. Even after a year, brain injury victims can exhibit personality changes, depression and emotional instability. In some cases, victims may be so affected by memory loss that they are unable to work.

We recommend that family members and even co-workers keep a diary or journal to document subtle changes that common testing procedures may not reveal after a traumatic head injury. People close to the victim are more likely to notice changes that may not be picked up even during a long stay in a rehab facility.

Brain Damage Can Remain Hidden in TBI Cases

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) often occurs when there is a rapid acceleration and deceleration of the brain, such as in a whiplash accident or a fall or car accident that results in head impact. A "concussion" type of head injury is sometimes referred to as closed head injury. Although most often involving a loss of consciousness, brain injuries can also occur in the absence of a loss of consciousness, as in the case of someone who is dazed, confused, or otherwise has an altered mental status after an accident. Brain injuries can be long lasting and sometimes difficult to prove, especially when there are no outward physical signs of the injury. In fact, a traumatic brain injury can be present, yet routine neurological examinations could show up normal. However, our law firm can help even in the most challenging circumstances.
